"Pizza by the slice, beer by the can, liquor by the shot" - Margate-based pizza shop Palms Pizzeria sets out to provide the local community with classic NY-slice style pizza, fresh pints, and good times.
1. Before we get into Palms, can you tell us a little about yourself and your background in business?
Josh (Ward) and I (Stuart Clarke) have both worked in the music industry since we were young tykes, and have worked together across various artists over the years, which is where we know each other from.
2. What inspired you to open Palms Pizzeria, and what sets it apart from other pizza shops in the area?
We have both spent a lot of time in New York over the years and knocked back our fair share of slices there. We’re really just trying to recreate that NYC slice shack / dive bar experience that we miss.
3. How does Palms play a role in the Margate Community?
We try to fill a gap between fast food and the sit down, higher price point restaurants in town. Good fresh ingredients, and fast, delicious pizza at an affordable price.
4. How do you stay inspired and creative when it comes to developing new menu items and experimenting with flavours and ingredients?
The pizza scene is full of great minds to bounce off, and we do a lot of collaborations with other restaurants and chefs in Margate and beyond that keep things interesting.
5. Can you tell us about some of the challenges you've faced as a business owner, and how you overcame them?
Winter is a bastard! You learn to swim.
6. What have been some of the highlights over the last year at Palms? Any specific collabs or events that stand out?
We’ve had some huge weekends with London legends like Whyte Rushen, Mokes, White Men Can’t Jerk, and Jesse from World Famous Gordos. Locally, we had a lot of fun with collabs with Pasta Slut, Forts, and The Dalby Cafe.
7. If you could only eat one item off your menu for the rest of your life, what would you pick and why?
Pepperoni. No messin’!
8. How do you balance running a restaurant with your personal life?
I’m not sure there is a balance. You’re always doggy paddling one in favour of the other.
9. What advice would you give to someone looking to start a similar venture?
Make it great!
10. Now for the most important question: Pineapple on pizza – yes or no?
Big time! Some of our favourite pizzas have had pineapple on them.
